Interview with Run Leader Danielle
How long have you been running with ICR?
I think it is coming up to 3 years. I know I started on a wet, windy, cold night in winter so I must have been feeling very motivated to get involved!
How and why did you start running?
About 13 years ago I became quite ill and had to have more ops than I care to remember over the next 6 years. After each operation I had to build my strength back up to make myself strong enough for the inevitable next one. After my final op and recovery I joined a gym and got back into walking, which has always been a passion of mine. I also started going to a bootcamp that involved a bit of running, which I was surprised to find I quite enjoyed. I decided I might start running a bit more but as soon as I went out on my own, I realised I did not like it at all! A good friend of mine is a run leader in Ipswich and she suggested I went along to a Thursday night free run on the prom. After a bit of deliberating I went along, and I found I did like running…… if I was running with others.
How does running make you feel?
I love being out in the fresh air, surrounded by nature and in the company of good friends. Running ticks all those boxes for me, so it makes me feel happy and incredibly lucky to be able to enjoy these things.
How long have you been a RL?
About a year and a half, I think, with the current situation I have completely lost track of time. I do remember that I was really touched when Emma called to ask me if I would become a Run Leader. My green vest makes me smile every time I put it on.
What inspired you to become a RL?
ICR has given me the opportunity to make great friends and run in a safe and supported environment. I wanted to be able to give that back to make it a reality for others.
How did you feel first time out as a RL?
Pretty nervous! But I had done a fair bit of prep to remove some of the nerves, plus I knew it was a safe and supportive environment and had another run leader by my side. During lockdown I’ve done a fair few online videos, so I have some great new warmups and cool downs that I’m excited to try.
What motivates you/how do you combat front-door-itis?
I must admit I don’t suffer from front-door-itis as I don’t run on my own. Therefore, I have made plans to run with others so it does not cross my mind not to go as I would be letting them down. A plan’s a plan, even if the weather is being horrendous. On your own that would be horrible, with others it’s entertaining
What's your favourite ICR route/training session?
I do love a prom run; we are so lucky to have that on our doorsteps, especially when it’s warm and we run for ice cream and then a little dip in the sea.
What's your favourite running gear?
My Brooks Ghost trainers are a game changer, I swear they make me run better. First pair I got I felt so different when I ran. I am now on my second pair but think I might need to invest again soon as the miles are topping up – what a shame!
I also love my Victoria Secrets sports bras as they are super comfy and do up at the front so no trying to wriggle out of them after a sweaty run.
